Chapter 16 Congratulations.
Stephen’s breath hitched.
His dark, fathomless eyes gazed at her, their depths concealing his emotions.
Abigail turned and, clutching her shoes, walked away one step at a time.
“Get in,” Stephen’s low, magnetic voice commanded from behind.
Abigail’s gaze hardened with a hint of bitterness. “Are you having second thoughts about the divorce?”
If so, he would be betraying Candace, who sacrificed her own leg to save him.
“We’re currently on the Lockhart family’s territory. It wouldn’t look good for the Lockhart family if someone saw you hobbling away from here,” Stephen stated coldly.
Abigail’s eyelashes trembled slightly. It was somewhat amusing that she had even entertained the notion he wouldn’t divorce her.
“You’ve mentioned it yourself, Abigail. We don’t harbor any deep–seated resentment toward each other.”
He hurled her words back at her exactly as she had spoken them.
Abigail’s fingers tightened in fists, then around and got into the car.
Upon seeing her return, a wave of relief washed over Stephen.
He composed himself and got behind the wheel.
Her reflection in the rearview mirror revealed a stark contrast to her usual vivacity, as if a light had gone out inside her.
“Move to the front,” he firmly commanded.
Abigail glared at him and said, “You’re being completely unreasonable, Stephen! You’re well aware that my feet are hurting.”
Despite knowing that her feet were blistered, he still wanted her to move back and forth.
Stephen’s hand rested lightly on the steering wheel, his long, graceful fingers. drumming a silent rhythm. He didn’t speak, nor did he start the car.
As a result, an uncomfortable silence filled the space.
“What a jerk!” Abigail thought to herself, before getting into the front passenger seat

with a huff.
It was only then that Stephen started the car and drove forward. Along the way, neither of them spoke another word.
It wasn’t until they reached the entrance of Huntington Residences that Abigail finally spoke, saying, “We’ll meet at the entrance of the courthouse at 9:00 am
tomorrow.”
With that, she threw open the door and stormed out, refusing to meet Stephen’s gaze. Her retreat was hasty, as if something was chasing her.

Stephen’s jaw clenched, his gaze fixed on her retreating figure until she disappeared
into the distance.
Afterward, he retrieved a pack of cigarettes from the glove compartment, tapped one out, and lit it. In an instant, the car was filled with a haze of smoke, making Stephen’s face appear even more grim and cold.
Upon returning home, Abigail first tended to the blisters on her feet, and then immediately proceeded to find her marriage certificate.
As she looked at the marriage certificate, her eyes couldn’t help but well up with
tears.
When they got their marriage certificate, she had thought to herself that he was the one for her. Having been on her own since childhood, she was overjoyed to be with
him.
Upon looking at the photo she had taken with Stephen on the day they got their marriage certificate, she could see that their faces were brimming with happiness and joy.
All of a sudden, her tears started falling, directly landing on Stephen’s face in the photo.
Her tears blurred his face and also blurred her sight.
A wave of despair washed over her. She had loved him with every fiber of her being. yet his restored memories had seemingly erased her from his heart.
When he first learned sign language, he clumsily signed that he would always be by
her side–what a big fat liar!
Abigail, clutching her marriage certificate, curled up on the couch, her rimmed and lifeless.

Every corner of this small apartment was filled with their sweet and happy memories. Every time she thought of them, it caused her heartache, so she chose to let them go.
She was growing weary of the constant ache in her heart during these past few days.
She decided to act as if that person had never been part of her life. From that point. on, she would be on her own, with no one to depend on.
At that moment, she smiled wryly and inwardly congratulated herself on the divorce.
