Chapter 28 Regret Is a Bitter Pill
Stephen frowned and ended the call abruptly before walking out.
Candace had already reached Paige in the garden.
She held a cotton candy and offered it to Paige. “Mrs. Lockheart Senior, look at this cute little cat.”
Paige’s eyes brightened when she saw the cotton candy, but she didn’t accept it. Instead, she pulled on Abigail’s hand and said, “Abigail, can you get me a cotton candy? I don’t like the cat–shaped candy. I want the rabbit.”
The moment Candace appeared, Abigail felt herself tensing up.
However, upon hearing Paige’s remarks, she suddenly felt a strange relief. She couldn’t describe the exact emotions she felt, but it was a mix between sadness and the urge to cry.
“Alright, I’ll get it for you.”
Paige grinned happily and stated, “You’re the best, my granddaughter–in–law!”
Candace stood there and awkwardly held the cotton candy in the air. She then slowly retracted her hand and gazed at Abigail. “Mrs. Lockheart Senior likes you.”
“Paige just happens to like me, that’s all,” Abigail replied faintly.
Upon hearing this, Candace gave a slight grin and dropped her gaze, her eyes flashing with disdain.
She wondered if Candace was hinting that Paige didn’t like her.
“Grandma.” Stephen walked over at this moment. “Are you tired? Do you want to rest?
Paige grabbed Abigail’s hand and demanded, “I want Abigail to come with me.”
“Alright.” With that, Abigail assisted her back to the building.
After a few steps, Paige realized Stephen hadn’t followed them, so she motioned him over. “Stephen, come here!”
Abigail couldn’t help but find how Paige ordered him around hilarious.
Stephen walked over and supported her, saying, “Let’s go, Grandma.”
Paige was overjoyed. “Stephen, you must cherish Abigail. Otherwise, she’ll leave you,

and it’ll be too late to regret it!” She then leaned closer to him and whispered, “Regret is a bitter pill to swallow.”
But there was no such thing as regret medicine in the world.
Stephen listened to her without responding, while Abigail looked at him with a cold
gaze.
She believed he wouldn’t regret losing her.”
They were already at the courthouse earlier. If it weren’t for Paige, they would’ve had the divorce by now.
A flood of bitterness washed over her emotions, but she pushed herself not to think
about it.
Candace stood behind them and watched their backs. They seemed like a happy family, whereas she was just an outsider.
Suddenly, she grabbed the cotton candy and squeezed it until it was distorted before tossing it in the garbage can.
After Abigail and Stephen assisted Paige to her room, his phone buzzed, and he turned to Abigail, pleading, “Please take care of Grandma for a moment.”
Then, he walked out with his phone.
“Where is he going?” Paige inquired curiously.
Abigail replied, “He’s busy at work, so he probably went to deal with some work matters.”
“Oh.” Paige didn’t seem to care much about him.
Afterward, Abigail picked out a storybook and began reading it to Paige. About ten minutes later, the elderly woman fell asleep.
Abigail tucked her in and silently exited the room.
She then returned to the garden and saw two people standing together under the sunlight. Stephan had his back to her while Candace looked up at him with
admiration.
Abigail wanted to look away when she saw Stephen reach out and hug Candace.
Her breath hitched. It felt as if a dagger had been thrust into her heart at that moment, and the pain was so intense that it made her body tremble.
