Chapter 73 Leaving Lockhart Mansion
It was Stephen who had proposed the divorde, yet he was the one delaying it.
Abigail used to wonder what he was thinking, but now, she didn’t care anymore.
If he didn’t let her have her way, he couldn’t expect to take responsibility for Candace either. Unless, of course, he intended to make Candace his mistress.
But she doubted he would do that. After all, Candace was important to him.
As Abigail thought about that, her eyes stung. She quickly closed her eyes, trying to contain her emotions.
After
a long moment, she finally heard the sound of the door closing.
At that instant, she felt like her heart was being smashed by a heavy hammer. It was shattered completely, and the pain was so intense it was almost numbing.
She bit her lip hard, but she couldn’t stop the tears from falling.
Images
of Stephen’s recent gentleness replayed in her mind. For a moment, it felt like the old days when they were still happy together.
Suddenly, Abigail got up, opened the door, and left.
The house was spacious, but it felt incredibly stifling. Every corner was filled with his presence, as though constantly reminding her that her beloved Steve had gone to
see another woman.
As she stepped out of the mansion, the cold wind hit her, making her shiver, but her resolve strengthened.
She had to leave this place and stay far away from him. Only then would she not feel heartbroken.
Meanwhile, Stephen arrived at Candace’s apartment.
She lived alone. When she opened the door, her face was pale.
“I’m sorry, Stephen… I know you just got back, and I shouldn’t be bothering you, but I’m in so much pain…” Candace apologized to him.
“Did you call an ambulance?” Stephen asked
She was taken aback by his question and then looked ashamed. “I–I forgot.”

Hearing that, he took out his phone and called for an ambulance, then helped her sit on the couch. “Can you hold on a bit longer?
“I have the strength to hold on with you here.” She looked at him.
Yet he didn’t reply.
Candace’s eyes flickered, and she asked, “Does Ms. Lloyd know you came to see me? Won’t she be… upset?”
Stephen pressed his lips into a thin line. Instead of answering her question, he said, ” If you’re in pain, rest as much as you can. The ambulance will be here soon.”
A glint of coldness flashed in Candace’s eyes, but it quickly vanished. She gripped. his hand tightly. “Stephen, it hurts so much…”
She held onto his hand, not wanting to let go.
Seeing her in such pain, Stephen didn’t pull away and let her hold on.
The ambulance arrived quickly.
Candace held tightly to Stephen’s hand the entire way to the hospital.
After an examination, it was determined that Candace had acute appendicitis and needed surgery.
Before being wheeled into the operating room, she looked at Stephen with teary eyes. “Stephen, will you wait for me? I don’t want to come out to an empty room. It reminds me of two years ago when I went through surgery and rehabbed alone…”
As she said that, she started to cry, looking pitiful.
Stephen’s eyes grew more complex. “I’ll wait.”
Candace finally smiled but didn’t forget to say, “You should let Ms. Lloyd know. It’s late. She’ll worry if you’re not home.”
“No need, Stephen said flatly, then gave the doctor a nod to take her in.
Indeed, there was no need. They were about to divorce. His affairs were no longer any of her concern.
