Chapter 95 She Needed to Marry Stephen
As Candace looked at her elegant reflection in the mirror, her face lit up with a satisfied smile. However, as her gaze fell on the prosthetic limb of her lower leg, at flicker of disgust crossed her eyes.
She had sacrificed so much to be with Stephen. She needed to marry him. He was
meant to be hers alone.
When Stephen arrived, Candace greeted him with a beaming smile, “Stephen, you’re here!”
“Mm,” Stephen responded, removing his shoes and stepping inside.
Candace’s eyes held a glimmer of hope, but he didn’t spare her a single glance. She bit her lip and said, “Stephen, do you like my new dress?”
She spun around in front of him, hoping for a compliment. Stephen’s gaze finally landed on her, but only briefly. “What did you want to talk about?”
Candace’s disappointment deepened. She was saddened that Stephen didn’t notice the effort she put into her appearance. She wondered if he was this indifferent with Abigail too.
“Let’s eat first,” Candace said. Masking her emotions, she led him to the dining area. Stephen followed, his eyes darkening as he glanced at her prosthetic leg.
Candace poured two glasses of red wine, placing one in front of Stephen and keeping the other for herself. She sat beside him and smiled brightly, saying, ” Stephen, thank you for always looking out for me. I want to toast to you.”
Stephen didn’t lift his glass. “I was just doing my duty.”
Candace’s lips quivered slightly. “Have we been apart so long that you’ve grown distant? You weren’t this cold before.”
Her eyes glistened with tears. “Stephen, have you fallen for Abigail? Do you not want to divorce her?”
Stephen frowned. “Stop overthinking.”
He picked up his glass and clinked it with hers. The crisp sound of their glasses meeting echoed, and the red wine swayed gently in the transparent glasses,
mirroring Candace’s turbulent emotions.
Candace took a sip of her wine but kept her gaze fixed on Stephen. “I know we’ve been apart for nearly two years and things have changed. But I hope you’ll give us

some time to reconnect. What do you say?”
Stephen pursed his lips, saying nothing.
Candace smiled brightly. “If you truly love Abigail, I’ll wish you both well. As for my leg, please don’t feel bad about it. Helping you was my choice, and I don’t expect anything from you.”
Candace’s gentle and kind demeanor seemed almost otherworldly. However, Stephen frowned. “Candace, I’ll take responsibility. Don’t jump to conclusions.”
Candace couldn’t understand why Stephen refused to divorce Abigail if he was willing to take responsibility. She had heard clearly that Abigail said it was Stephen who was holding up the divorce.
She wanted to ask him the reason for that, but she sensed Stephen wasn’t keen on discussing it.
She didn’t want to waste this opportunity now that he was at her place for dinner.
After dinner and some wine, the atmosphere became more relaxed. As night fell, Candace reached to turn on the lights, but they flickered briefly and then went out.
“Stephen!” She gasped in surprise.
Stephen responded, “It’s okay. I’m here.”
