Chapter 143 I’ll Compensate You
A pale smile appeared on Candace’s face. “I’m fine. I was just too tired and fell asleep.”
“Nonsense. Who sleeps on the floor? And with the gas on? Caddy, don’t do anything foolish okay?” Stacy said.
“Okay, I understand.”
At that moment, Stephen walked in. He looked at Candace’s pale face, his expression tightening.
“Stephen, I’m sorry to have given you a scare. I’m really fine. If you have things to do, go ahead, Candace said, appearing understanding despite her condition.
Stacy interjected, “What does he have to do? He was probably just going to see that woman. Caddy, you never should’ve saved him. You lost a leg for him, and now, you almost died.”
“Stacy, stop it,” Candace admonished before starting to cough
violently.
Stephen stepped forward, handing her a glass of water.
Candace tried to sit up but failed. Seeing this, a deep frown.
marred his face.
“Why are you just standing there? Help her!” Stacy snapped.
“I can manage…” Candace weakly insisted, trying to sit up again but failing.
Stephen reached out, supporting her shoulders and helping her
- up. Candace leaned weakly against his chest while sipping the
water.
Stacy quickly took a photo with her phone before saying,
Stephen, you need to divorce that woman. You should be good to Caddy.”
Stephen’s voice was cold when he replied, “You’re in no position to tell me what to do.”
Hearing that, Stacy’s expression darkened. She wanted to say more, but Stephen’s cold look made her hesitant, and she ultimately remained silent.
After drinking the water, Candace’s lips were moist and her coughing subsided. “Stephen, don’t blame Stacy. She’s just
worried.”
“Do you need more water?” Stephen asked.
Candace shook her head. “No, thank you.”
“No need to thank me.” Stephen placed the glass aside and
moved to leave.
But Candace grabbed his sleeve, her eyes filled with tears as she asked, “Stephen, tell me you’ll divorce her. You said before you’d use her as my shield. Is that true?”
Stephen frowned. “You’re weak right now. Don’t overthink
things.”
Tears rolled down Candace’s cheeks, making her look more pitiful. “Stephen, you promised you’d divorce her. Why are your still together?
“If… you’ve really fallen for Abigail, tell me and I’ll let go. You don’t need to feel guilty about my leg. I’ve gotten used to the prosthetic leg. I can live well.”
Stephen felt frustrated. When he first regained his memory, he learned that Candace had saved him and lost her leg in the process. He felt deeply indebted to her and wanted to
compensate her. But now…
He placed her back on the bed and said in a cold voice, “Caddy, I’ll compensate you. Just rest well.” With that, he turned and left.
“Hey, you…” Stacy saw this and wanted to say more.
But Candace stopped her. “Forget it, Stacy.”
When the door closed, Stacy started fuming. “What does he mean by that? Is he really not going to divorce that woman? What about you?”
Candace turned to look out the window. The sky had fully darkened, and her gaze darkened as well. It seemed she would need to take drastic measures.
